 Trade union in Plantation sectors

Trade union means any association or combination of workmen or employees, whether temporary or permanent to regulate the relationship between employee and employer to impose restrictive condition (Trade union ordinance No.14 of 1935)

Trade union is a continuous association of wage-earning for the purpose of maintaining or improving the condition of their working lives (Kirielle & Gamage, 2016).

In Sri Lanka, the trade union ordinance is the ordinance to provide for the registration and control of trade unions. Those who registered under this ordinance can exercise rights granted under the ordinance. There are 1843 union functioning at the end of year 2020.

Plantation sector in Sri Lanka contribute around 20% of the national export revenue. The main production of the plantation sector in the hill country is the tea, and majority of the labor force constitutes of Indian Tamil

There are more than fifty unions in the plantation sector (Labor statistics 2020) But only Twelve unions are functioning actively. Ceylon workers congress (CWC) is the leading union and Ceylon state staff (CESU) is the only union in Sri Lanka for the estate staff in plantation sector

But the average food expenditure per month is increasing every year.

Eg:

2012/13 Food expenditure per month – LKR 15,651.00

2016 Food expenditure per month – LKR 19,114.00

2019 Food expenditure per months – LKR 22,130.00

(Labor statistics 2020)

This shows trade unions pay less attention to workmen’s needs.

Trade union trends to immerge as interest group which act as a welfare broker rather than class organizations. The central leadership is dominated largely by outsiders. They are not recruited from the ranks of workers. However, the largely ethically based trade unions in the plantation sector have not contributed to making the workers more conscious of their identity as a class. (Hollup, 1992)

Primary purpose of the trade union is protecting members rights and providing fair treatments (Kirielle & Gamage, 2016). But is plantation sector unions play a different roll being a broker, instead of union.

  1. Tea estate employees have been demanding for decent salaries for the past three years, and are often referred to be the economy's backbone. Isn't it ?
